

Once There Were Cats


At the centre of all there is, was and ever will be, lies a magical dimension known as The Gloam. For millennia a proud Feline Empire ruled over the land. But one fateful night, the jealous frogs of the Night Court and the cunning birds of the Day Court wove a spell of such dark power that, come dawn, the cats were gone. Not only vanished, but forgotten — as if they had never existed at all.
Yet the spell was not perfect.
This is the tale of Chips, a cat who slipped through the cracks of oblivion. Armed with only her wits and wizardry, and the unlikely friendship of an enigmatic duck, she embarks on a journey to uncover the truth of her origins — and the fate of a forgotten people.
Once There Were Cats (OTWC) is a trivia-based role-playing game (RPG). The game takes a multiple-choice quiz mechanic and ties it to a RPG-combat system, where players defeat enemies by answering questions and casting spells.
In OTWC, the player takes on the role of Chips, a young feline Enigmancer. Chips wakes up in captivity, and has no idea who she is, where she is, and how she got there. Her captors are a pair of fiendish Avian doctors who are also perplexed, as they have no idea what manner of creature she is. In the end they decide she must be a mutant form of duck, as she can somehow understand the quacking of a duck they are conducting experiments on. Offended and enraged, the duck breaks free from its restraints, liberates Chips, and together, feline and waterfowl, fight for freedom, before embarking on an epic journey across a magical land.
